PROVINCE OF COMO

Parish Church of Civello

Piazza Concordato, 5 - Villa guardia (CO)

The parish church of Civello, which is dedicated to Saints Cosma and Damiano and ia situated in a panoramic position close to the remaining tower of the castle, is considered to be the most ancient. Reference to it was already present in the second half of the 1200s when the small fort was built, but it even appears to date back to the centuries preceding the year 1000.  The current building was renovated in the second half of the 18th century (and then completed in the subsequent century). The sacristy stores a reproduction of the Death of Christ by Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) and a canvas of modest size but excellent workmanship portraying the Martyrdom of Saint Agatha.

PROVINCE OF VARESE

Villa Oliva

via Alessandro Volta, 15 - Cassano Magnago (VA)

Already a noble residence in the 19th century, the Villa is situated in the “high” part of the city and overlooks the 60 thousand square metres of ground of the Magana park. It became a municipal property in 1985 and underwent a series of renovations paying heed to its original architectural design. The 18th century rooms were restored, highlighting the embellishments that each family owner, first the Bossi, then the Agazzini and, from 1828, the Oliva, added depending on the tastes in fashion at that time, creating delightful environmentsin a range of styles.

Visit the rooms by prior appointment with the municipal offices

Castello Visconteo

Piazza Cavour - Fagnano Olona (VA)

Castello Visconteo in Fagnano was built in the 13th century. It was built for military purposes and enlarged in the 16th century by Gaspare Visconti. Within, it encloses a beautiful garden and two towers from which you can get a magnificent view of Monte Rosa. Inside the castle is the town's tourist office.

Church of S.Maria Assunta

Piazza Martiri della Libertà - Gorla Maggiore (VA)

In its current state, it dates back to 1850, but all that is left of its earlier structure  is the bell tower (apart from the belfry) of Romanesque workmanship. The old bell tower is one of the rare examples in the Varese plain dating back to the Middle Ages. The church underwent various restorations and changes both internal and external with the addition of statues and frescoes.

Chiesa of S.Lorenzo

Piazza S.Lorenzo - Gorla Minore (VA)

A church of neoclassical style, containing two details: the fresco of Our Lady of Help (Madonna dell’Aiuto) dating back to the 15th century and the 4 tiles narrating the resurrection attributed to Morazzone (1571 – 1626).

Place of worship with free entry.

Villa Durini

Via Roma, 56 - Gorla Minore (VA)

Built in the 17th century, the Villa was renovated and enlarged in the 18th century. It preserves on the ground floor  ceiling coffers of the 18th and 19th centuries and the hall currently used as Mayor’s office is furnished with period pieces. On the ground floor, around thirty or so paintings dating from the 1600 to 1900 dating from the 1600 to 1900, which portray individuals from the Durini family, to whom the Villa previously belonged, are exhibited.  Adjacent to the Villa is a park of around 2 hectares which descends onto the Olona Valley with centuries-old trees including a majestic Cedar of Lebanon.

Visits possible upon prior request to the municipal offices.

Church of S.Maria della Neve

Via Cascina S.Maria - Cislago (VA)

Sanctuary richly decorated with devotional frescoes. Early sources already refer to its existence in 1256. The church was completely covered in frescoes from ceiling to floor and on the walls is a cycle of paintings of the Madonna as protectress of motherhood and of the holy helpers from the plague. Many of these paintings are attributed to Giangiacomo Lampugnani. The recent restoration has also revived the ancient splendour of the many paintings that had been covered in the 19th century. The beautiful Baroque wooden altar displays a rare image of Our Lady of Childbirth  (Madonna del Parto), which has accompanied its fame over the centuries.
